Prairie Public is hosting a free film screening of “Let the Little Light Shine” at the Fargo Theatre on November 3 at 6:30 p.m. The film will be followed by a conversation with the filmmaker, Kevin Shaw. This documentary screening is part of the 2022 North Dakota Human Rights Arts and Film Festival.

In the film, a thriving, top-ranked African American elementary school is threatened to be closed and replaced by a new high school that favors the community’s wealthier residents. Parents, students and educators fight for the elementary school’s survival.

As a director, producer and cinematographer, Kevin Shaw has created award-winning content for national television networks. Shaw’s current directorial work, “Let the Little Light Shine,” premiered at the True False Fest in March 2022 to stellar reception, where the Chicago Tribune lauded the film for carrying “the visceral impact of all six ‘Rocky’ films and a few ‘Creed’ films put together.” The film will air on PBS’ award-winning series “POV” in December.

“POV” (a cinema term for “point of view”) is television’s longest-running showcase for independent nonfiction films. “POV” premieres 14-16 of the best, boldest and most innovative programs every year on PBS. “POV” films are known for their intimacy, their unforgettable storytelling and their timeliness, putting a human face on contemporary social issues.

The 2022 North Dakota Human Rights Arts and Film Festival begins November 1 in Fargo with an opening ceremony at the Radisson Blu and continues through November 5 with filmmaker workshops at the Plains Art Museum, community lunches and panel discussions at the Fargo Public Library, and film screenings, filmmaker Q&As, and community discussions at the Fargo Theatre.

Prairie Public’s free film screening is made possible by a grant from American Documentary|POV with funding provided by the Open Society Foundations.
