Bin 4: Pattern Play
Problem solving becomes a rewarding work of art with Pattern Play! Use these brightly-colored blocks in varying shapes and the pattern cards to introduce significant math concepts like sorting, matching, symmetry, congruence and fractions. Pattern cards are numbered in order of difficulty, ranging from beginner to expert. The blocks can also be used to create endless freeform designs, providing hours of engaging creative play. Do Together
Ideas for how to use this bin:
- Group the blocks together by shapes. Count how many of the same shapes there are.
- Work together to make a “pattern garden.” Write a song about your pattern.
- Partner patterns: Pair up and sit back-to-back. Each partner has a group of the same blocks. Partner #1: Make a pattern with your blocks, then describe it to your partner. Partner #2: You cannot look at your partner’s pattern, but you can ask as many questions as you want. When done, turn around and compare!
- Make a pattern with the blocks and then draw the pattern you created on paper.

Talk and Wonder Together
Maximize learning using these prompts during or after the activities:
- What is a pattern? How can you tell when something is a pattern? How do you know when something breaks the pattern?
- What other things could you use to make a pattern?
- Do you see any patterns around you?
- Is there a way to hear patterns? Hint: Think about Mr. E’s song!
